This Lead Investigator program is ideal for those wishing to enhance their WHS skills and knowledge in the workplace. The course is designed specifically for anyone who will be leading an incident investigation team, which may include supervisors, health & safety representatives, WHS committee members, managers, safety officers, union officials, and inspectors.

Lead initial response to and investigate WHS incidents – Course information
This course covers key incident investigation concepts and techniques designed to equip learners with the skills and knowledge to efficiently and effectively investigate workplace incidents, identify root causes, and recommend effective corrective actions to prevent future incidents.
*ICAM stands for Incident Cause Analysis Method. ICAM is an investigation methodology commonly used in a range of sectors and workplaces, suitable for those working in WHS-related roles in a range of industries including building & construction, mining, transport, aviation, rail, security, health, education and more!
This ICAM Lead Investigator course has been developed for learners wishing to:
- extend their existing knowledge and skills to successfully lead teams and investigations
- utilise their existing real-world experience in incident investigations in the workplace with recognised certification
- utilise their prior ICAM training to step up into lead investigation roles

Course Details
Course Duration & Structure
This course is offered via two (2) delivery modes totalling approximately 32-40 hours to complete the course work, assessment preparation and assessment task completion.
- Full-time blended: Face-to-face learning + online assessment : 2 days classroom-based learning (approximately 8 hours per day) + Self-paced assessment preparation and completion time. This option is a packaged enrolment with our industry partner delivering the industry recognised *ICAM course facilitation (Elect Training and Consulting) + Essential Training’s online assessment tools for the unit of competency BSBWHS515.
- Self-paced, online: Up to three (3) months to complete online learning and assessment tasks.
Course Certification
Participants who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment which is nationally recognised within the Australian Qualifications Framework. The Statement is issued by Essential Training (RTO Provider 45750) for the Unit of Competency: BSBWHS515 Lead initial response to and investigate WHS incidents.
Course Fee
- Option 1: $1,350.00 pp for public courses with monthly intakes – packaged with ICAM training- industry recognised certification + assessment only pathway for the unit of competency BSBWHS5515
- Option 2: $595.00 pp for self-paced, online course – commence at any time with up to three (3) months to complete course work and assessment tasks.

Course Entry Requirements
There are no prerequisites or entry requirements for this courses, however, for clients wishing to enrol, learners should:

Be at least eighteen (18) years of age at the time of course commencement

Have suitable Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills at least to the level of Year 10 or equivalent.
- Have a relevant background relating to WHS knowledge and skills.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Essential Training does not offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for this course. Due to the duration and cost of this short course, RPL assessment would have limited value to participants. However, does offer an ‘assessment only’ pathway option for those participants who have previously completed the industry recognised ICAM training.
