A mandatory sign (blue) indicating an action that must be followed 

Identify, locate, and upload images of the following items:  

A prohibition sign (red) indicating a prohibited action in a particular workspace 

Identify, locate, and upload images of the following item:

Fire equipment sign indicating the location of a fire safety equipment item 

Identify, locate, and upload images of the following item:  

A warning sign (yellow) commonly found at a construction site as an alert to a potential hazard 

Risk Identification, reduction and/or removal:  

SCENARIO:  

You have identified two separate hazards on the construction site that you have just commenced work on.

Assessment Task:  

You are required to orally report these two hazards to your supervisor.

Learner Prompts:  

• Record your audio or a video of you verbally reporting these (one at a time) to your simulated supervisor.  

• Ensure you clearly explain the type of hazard you have identified and why you deem it to be hazardous.  

• For each hazard identified, explain how the risk could be reduced or removed – include information of what actions could remove or reduce the risk and what controls would be used including any appropriate PPE to minimise or control the risk.  

Responding to incidents and emergencies:  

SCENARIO:  

You enter the lunchroom on site, and there are a few other workers just sitting down to eat lunch. You notice a small fire has started in the rubbish bin just outside the back entrance.

You are required to respond to this fire/smoke related incident accordingly.

Assessment Task:  

• Orally explain the basic procedures you followed to respond to this fire/smoke related incident.
• Include in your explanation, which type of firefighting equipment was available and used, and why.

Learner Prompts:  

• Record your audio or a video of you verbally explaining how you responded to this simulated incident.  

• Ensure you clearly explain the action taken and why:  

• What procedures did you follow?  

• How did you communicate with other personnel in the lunchroom? 

• Describe the response actions taken including use of any firefighting equipment available. 

• What equipment was available in the area and why you chose the item/s you did.   

Safety Signage:  

Explain the purpose/meaning of the various safety signs and symbols associated with construction safety signage.  

Assessment Task:  

Verbally provide at least one example of the following and its use:  

1. An Emergency Information Sign 
2. A Fire Safety Sign 
3. A Hazard Sign or Symbol 
4. A Regulatory Sign or Symbol 
5. Safety/Lockout Tag   

Learner Prompts:  

• Upload the images of the 5 examples you will be describing (and number them accordingly).  

• Record your audio or a video of you verbally describing each sign/symbol (one at a time) and its meaning/use. 

Documentation:  

Verbally explain the following items:  

• JSAs 

• SWMS 

• SDS 

Assessment Task:  

You are required to orally describe these three (3) types of documentation listed above. Describe what they are (their full name), what their purpose is (what type of information might they contain), and what they are generally used for.   

Learner Prompt:  

• Record your audio or a video of you verbally describing these documents (one at a time) as if you were explaining them to a new colleague who has just started on the same construction site as you.   

Health and Safety Personnel:  

Verbally explain the roles of the designated health and safety personnel on your construction site.  

Assessment Task:  

Explain the primary role of the following WHS personnel:  

• First Aid Officers

• Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs)

• WHS Committee members

• Supervisors

Learner Prompt:  

• Record your audio or a video of you verbally describing these various roles (one at a time) as if you were explaining who they are and what they do, to a new colleague who has just started on the same construction site as you.   

Demonstration:  

Use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). 

Many risks in the construction industry can be minimised or mitigated with the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  The video below demonstrates the correct fitting and usage of common PPE utilised on a construction site. 

Assessment Task:  

As per your assessment plan, you will have 4 items of PPE in front of you for this task (listed below).

From your PPE items, select one at a time and verbally explain what it is and provide at least one example of when it might be used on a construction site to minimise risk or control a hazard.

Select the appropriate PPE item you are describing and demonstrate correctly fitting it /wearing it.  

• eye protection 

• hearing protection 

• head gear/head protection  

• high visibility clothing item used on a worksite 

Learner Prompts:  

• Record a video of you verbally describing each item and a demonstration of you fitting/using it correctly.  

• Make sure the PPE is correctly fitted and verbally explain or demonstrate its correct use. 

• While fitting the item provide an example (orally) of when the item might be used and its purpose (on a construction site)
