Course Information

This course provides students with the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

This unit is ideal for all persons who may be required to provide an emergency response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings..

This course covers various aspects of responding to an emergency situation including but not limited to:

  • Recognising and assessing an emergency situation

  • Ensuring safety for self, bystanders, and casualty

  • Assessing the casualty and recognising the need for first aid response

  • Seeking assistance from emergency services

  • Providing first aid in accordance with established first aid principles and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation *(CPR) in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guideline

  • Completing applicable workplace/site documentation (including incident report forms)

  • Utilising available resources and equipment to monitor the situation and respond in accordance with first aid principles

  • Operating first aid equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions/requirements

  • Reporting details of incidents in line with appropriate workplace or site procedures

  • Monitoring the condition of the casualty

  • Accurately conveying incident details to emergency services

  • Managing casualties respectfully and obtaining consent where possible

  • Recognising possible psychological impacts on self and others and seeking help when required

  • Contributing to the review of the first aid response as required

Delivery Method

This is a blended delivery course comprising of a compulsory online (e-Learning) component to cover course theory, followed by a comprehensive face-to-face practical session delivered in a classroom/simulated workplace environment.

Course Duration & Structure

This blended course requires completion of the self-paced e-Learning component prior to commencing the practical session. Students will have access to the online portal for up to one (1) week prior to the practical session to complete the required theory. Depending on the student’s prior knowledge of First Aid and learning ability, students may take between 4-8 hours to complete the e-Learning tasks. This can be done in one sitting or students may complete online tasks over several sessions. The practical component (demonstration, scenarios and assessment) is conducted within a 4-5 hour face-to-face classroom-based session (session duration is based on class size and learner prior knowledge).

Course Entry Requirements

Essential Training has identified that clients will need to meet the following entry requirements prior to course commencement:​

  • be at least eighteen (18) years of age at the time of enrolment

  • provide/obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI)

  • provide photo ID at time of enrolment and prior to commencing the practical classroom activities

  • access to comfortable and appropriate attire for the practical session

  • have a health & fitness level required to carry out the practical assessment requirements including the ability to perform continuous CPR on an adult manikin while kneeling on the floor for up to 2 minutes on multiple occasions

  • have suitable English language proficiency and Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) skills at least to the level of Year 10 or equivalent (demonstrated via the Essential Training pre-enrolment evaluation)

Course Resource Requirement

This course has an e-learning component or pre-reading materials and requires learners wishing to undertake this course to have access to the internet and a personal computer or personal portable device (such as a laptop/notebook/tablet) to complete theory or any online assessment components prior to attending the practical course day.

Course Outcomes and Certification:

The course includes the skills and knowledge to recognise, respond to, and manage an emergency medical situation. On successful completion of this course, students will be awarded a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support

Re-certification: Current Industry standards recommend renewing this certification every 3 years, with the CPR component being updated every 12 months. This can be done via completing a Refresher Course.

Assessment

This course is assessed using a range of assessment methods and tools including online reading, writing and knowledge tasks, and scenario-based practical performance tasks observed by the Assessor.
