Course Information

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. This unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide CPR, in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Essential Training delivers a wide range of First Aid Certification, our experienced and qualified trainers deliver courses using the latest training techniques, sharing their comprehensive knowledge to support our graduates to feel confident administering first aid in a variety of emergency situations.

This course covers:

  • Recognising, assessing and responding to an emergency situation

  • Recognising the need for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and seeking assistance from emergency services

  • Performing CPR in accordance with the ARC guidelines

  • Operating an automated external defibrillator (AED) according to manufacturers’ instructions

  • Accurately communicating details of the incident to emergency services and in line with workplace procedures

  • Recognising the possible psychological impacts on self and others

  • Reviewing the incident

As Essential Training comprehensively covers CPR as part of its Provide First Aid [HLTAID011] training, learners can obtain dual certification to include recognition of their CPR knowledge and skills as part of this course (upon request).

The Provide CPR – Refresher Only course option is designed to refresh a learners’ Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills and use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in an emergency situation in the community or workplace until relieved by medical personnel. Therefore, the CPR course on offer is ideal for those requiring a refresher option to renew their CPR skills and knowledge annually.

Delivery Method

This is a blended delivery course comprising of a compulsory online (e-Learning) component to cover course theory, followed by a comprehensive face-to-face practical session delivered in a classroom/simulated workplace environment.

Course Duration & Structure

This course is delivered as a blended delivery mode with an e-learning self-paced component (completed over 2-4 hours) to cover theory and required knowledge, followed by a practical face-to-face session of 2-4 hours to cover practical skills demonstration and assessment (class duration depends on class size and learner prior knowledge of CPR).

Course Entry Requirements

To enrol as a refresher option, learners must have previously completed HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and/or HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) within the last 18 months.

Additionally, learners will need to meet the following entry requirements prior to course commencement:

be at least eighteen (18) years of age at the time of enrolment

  • provide/obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI)

  • provide photo ID at time of enrolment and prior to commencing the practical classroom activities

  • access to comfortable and appropriate attire for the practical session

  • have a health & fitness level required to carry out the practical assessment requirements including the ability to perform continuous CPR on an adult manikin while kneeling on the floor for up to 2 minutes on multiple occasions

  • have suitable English language proficiency and Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) skills at least to the level of Year 10 or equivalent (demonstrated via the Essential Training pre-enrolment evaluation)

Course Resource Requirement

This course has an e-learning component or pre-reading materials and requires learners wishing to undertake this course to have access to the internet and a personal computer or personal portable device (such as a laptop/notebook/tablet) to complete theory or any online assessment components prior to attending the practical course day.

Course Outcomes and Certification:

On successful completion of this course, students will be awarded a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Re-certification: Current Industry standards recommend renewing this certification every year – this can be done by completing a Refresher Course.

Assessment

This course is assessed using a range of assessment methods and tools including online reading, writing and knowledge tasks, and scenario-based practical performance tasks observed by the Assessor.
