This introductory course will equip health and safety representatives with in-depth knowledge and practical skills required to be effective in the workforce.
About us
Essential Training is a registered training provider (RTO 45750) approved by the WHS Commission to deliver Health and Safety Representative (HSR) training in Perth, Western Australia.

In collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Western Australia (CCIWA), Essential Training is the nominated training provider to deliver the HSR course to CCIWA members and non-members at the prestigious CCIWA training premises in Perth CBD.

Course Description and Outline
Our HSR training is delivered by highly qualified WHS specialists in small groups to maximise your learning experience and enhance your knowledge and skills to support your vital role as a HSR in your workplace.

Why complete this training?
Since 2022, changes to workplace health and safety laws added new roles and functions for health and safety representatives. This course offers an in-depth understanding of these changes and how they impact your role.
Attendees will also develop confidence to improve overall safety performance and have a meaningful impact on their organisation’s safety culture.
This course is designed by WorkSafe WA, and Essential Training is approved by the WHS Commission to deliver the training.
Course Duration & Structure
The course is delivered over 5 days. This duration is mandated by WorkSafe WA and cannot be modified. Essential Training delivers the course over 5 consecutive days (Monday to Friday) for advertised intakes.
The course is structured to cover the following topics over 5 days
Day 1
Introduction to the WHS legislative framework; Key parties and their obligations and duties.
Day 2
The role of the regulator; establishing representation in the workplace within the framework of the WHS Act.
Day 3
Participating in effective consultation – negotiation, issue resolution and minimising risks.
Day 4
Monitoring PCBU’s management of WHS risks – workplace inspections, notifiable incidents and incident investigation.
Day 5
Issuing of PINs and direction for ceasing unsafe work.

Public transportation is the easiest way to reach the training venue with various options nearby including the FREE CAT bus service.
*Please note the delivery venue is subject to change depending on client requirements, all training locations are centrally located with easy public transport access, and you will be advised in writing accordingly prior to course commencement of any changes.
Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to understand:
- Legislation relevant to the role and functions of a Health and Safety Representative
- Communicate effectively on health and safety matters to represent workers in your elected area
- Issue resolution processes
- Know your role in the WHS committee
- Be conversant with WorkSafe WA and their inspectors and be able to access and utilise WorkSafe WA information in relation to safety matters
- The process of conducting workplace inspections
- Issue a Provisional Improvement Notice (PIN)
- Hazard and risk management processes
- Write a job safety analysis (JSA)
- Your involvement in an investigation process
Certification
Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a ‘Certificate of Attendance’ from Essential Training. Successful course completion requires attendance at, and participation in, all 5 days of the course.
Further study pathways
Refresher course options are available for participants wishing to update their health and safety knowledge if the initial course has already been completed.
Completion of this course also provides a solid foundation for those wishing to pursue further studies in the WHS field – such as the Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety.
